Persona 5: The Phantom X

Complete Beginner's Guide to Mastering the Metaverse

Welcome to the Metaverse! Persona 5: The Phantom X is an exciting turn-based RPG that builds upon the beloved Persona 5 formula. While maintaining the core strategic combat that fans love, P5X introduces expanded team customization options and deeper tactical gameplay that will challenge both newcomers and veterans alike.

🎭 Team Building Fundamentals

Party Composition Strategy

Your team consists of Wonder (the protagonist) alongside three companion characters and one Navigator. The key to success lies in understanding the Harmony system – when multiple party members share the same elemental attribute, they can trigger powerful Harmony effects that significantly boost skill damage for that element.

Since Wonder can switch Personas mid-battle, you can strategically change which Harmony effect is active by equipping different Personas. This mechanic adds a layer of tactical depth that rewards thoughtful planning and adaptability during combat encounters.

⚔️ Combat Mechanics Mastery

Understanding the Down Gauge System

P5X introduces a sophisticated Down Gauge mechanic that governs when enemies (and your party) can be knocked down. Look for the shield icon next to an enemy's HP bar – this number indicates how many successful weakness exploitations or critical hits are needed to break their guard.

The process works in stages: first, you must deplete the Down Gauge by hitting weaknesses or landing critical strikes, then deliver one final blow to achieve a full knockdown. This system adds strategic depth by requiring sustained pressure rather than single lucky hits.

Elemental Warfare & Resistance Types

Mastering elemental interactions is crucial for victory. Every character and enemy has specific resistances that dramatically affect combat outcomes:

  • WEAK: Enemies take amplified damage and suffer Down Gauge reduction. Always prioritize these matchups for maximum effectiveness.
  • RESIST: Reduced damage output makes these attacks inefficient. However, Physical and Gun critical hits still reduce Down Gauge regardless of resistance.
  • NULL: Complete immunity – these attacks deal zero damage and should be avoided entirely.
  • REPEL: Dangerous reflection mechanic that turns your attacks against you. Exercise extreme caution.
  • ABSORB: Enemies heal instead of taking damage. Avoid these combinations at all costs.

Advanced Combat Techniques

1 MORE System: Successfully knocking down an enemy triggers a 1 MORE state, granting a powerful bonus attack. Unlike traditional extra turns, this functions as an enhanced strike that each character can only use once per combat round.

All-Out Attack: When all enemies are knocked down simultaneously, you can unleash a devastating All-Out Attack targeting every foe. The total damage scales with the number of participating allies, and uniquely, this powerful technique can be initiated even when the protagonist is incapacitated.

📊 Character Systems & Progression

Speed and Turn Management

The Speed statistic operates on a linear scale, primarily determining your team's action order and dodge frequency. Unlike some RPGs, high Speed doesn't grant additional actions – characters with inherent multi-turn abilities are the exception to this rule.

Efficient Resource Management

While Material Stages lack traditional sweep functions, they compensate with a reward multiplication system. You can claim up to 5x the standard rewards from a single clear, provided you have sufficient stamina reserves. This system encourages strategic stamina management for optimal progression.

Character Classes and Roles

Each character belongs to a specialized class that defines their battlefield role and strategic purpose:

Rebel: Single-target damage specialists who excel at eliminating priority threats with precision strikes.
Domination: Area-of-effect damage dealers perfect for handling multiple enemies simultaneously.
Vanguard: Defensive tanks who absorb damage and protect fragile team members from harm.
Superior: Buff-focused support characters who enhance team performance through powerful enhancements.
Subdue: Debuff specialists who weaken enemies and control the battlefield through status effects.
Elucidate: Navigator-class support providing off-field assistance and strategic advantages.

📈 Statistical Optimization Guide

Understanding character statistics is essential for building effective teams and maximizing combat potential:

Attack: The primary scaling statistic for most characters, directly increasing skill damage and effectiveness across the board.
Defense: Reduces incoming damage from all sources. Some specialized characters scale their abilities with Defense values.
HP: Increases maximum health capacity. Certain tank-oriented characters gain additional benefits from high HP pools.
Damage Bonus: Provides a flat percentage increase to all damage output, stacking multiplicatively with other modifiers.
Effect Hit Rate: Improves the success rate of status effects, debuffs, and other conditional abilities.
Critical Rate: Determines the frequency of critical hits, which can trigger Down Gauge reduction and bonus damage.
Critical Damage: Amplifies the damage multiplier when critical hits occur, scaling exponentially with Critical Rate.
Speed: Controls turn order and dodge frequency. Some agility-focused characters scale abilities with Speed values.
SP Regeneration: Increases SP recovery from consumable items and regenerative skills, extending combat sustainability.
Penetration: Ignores a percentage of enemy Defense before other Defense-reducing effects apply, ensuring consistent damage output.

Pro Tip: While Attack is universally valuable, don't overlook specialized builds. Tank characters benefit greatly from Defense and HP scaling, while support characters might prioritize Effect Hit Rate and SP Regeneration for sustained battlefield control.

Gacha System

Guide by: Tenacity & UnnamedRando

Overview on the System

This game runs on a gacha system, which is similar to gachapon machines or crane games where you put in coins in hope for a toy. This “machine” is called a banner. Different banners may have different pools of prizes (Weapons, characters, Personas) and slightly different mechanics. Every time you pull on a banner, there is a low chance that you will get a 5-star. This is the main method to obtain characters and high-tier weapons.

Rarity

Rarity is indicated by the number of stars a character/Persona/weapon has. A character is always either 4 or 5 stars. 4-stars are associated with the color yellow, while 5-stars are associated with purple. Weapons and Personas can range from 2–5 stars.

Metaverse Ambers and Pulling Currency

To pull on banners, you need Ambers. Ambers are used to buy gold and purple tickets (for character-related banners) and weapon coins (for weapon banners). A gold and purple ticket both cost 150 Ambers each, while a weapon coin costs 100 Ambers. It is strongly advised against spending Ambers on gold tickets, as you get many for free and the banners are permanent. Spending Ambers on purple tickets and weapon coins is better, as they are used on Limited Banners.

Pity

The number of times you pull on a banner is tracked, this is called pity. When reaching a certain number (hard pity), you are guaranteed a 5-star. There is a range before hard pity with increased rates, known as soft pity. When a Limited Banner ends, your pity is retained and transferred to the next Limited Banner. For every 10 pulls, you are guaranteed at least one 4-star.

50/50 and the Standard Pool

On some banners, there is a 50/50 system. When you get a 5-star, the game flips a coin to decide if you get the featured limited 5-star or a 5-star from the standard pool. The standard pool includes all released 4-star weapons, characters, their 5-star weapons, and 2-star Personas, plus a specific group of 5-star characters and their weapons. If you lose the 50/50, your next 5-star is guaranteed to be the featured character/weapon.

Fated Bond & Exclusive Bond

On limited character banners, you can choose between Exclusive Bond (guaranteed featured character at a higher pity) and Fated Bond (50/50 chance at a lower pity). These do not share a pity count. Choose carefully based on your risk tolerance.

Duplicates

If you get a character/weapon you already own, you can use these duplicates to strengthen them. For characters, this increases their Awareness level, granting new buffs and stats. For weapons, it increases their Reform level, upgrading existing effects.

Cognitive Currencies

Pulling also grants Cognitive Afterimages, Sections, and Shards. These can be exchanged for various items in the Cognition Shop.

Types of Banners

  • Phantom Thieves of Hearts/Beginner Banner: Uses gold tickets. Discounted 10-pulls. Get a choice of a 5-star character (Skull, Mona, or Panther) at 50 pulls.
  • Kadola Starlight Show: Uses purple tickets. A "Super Rerun" banner available for new players, letting you pick 3 characters from a large pool to pull for.
  • Kaidol Draft/Standard Banner: Uses gold tickets. Pull from the standard pool of characters and personas. At 300 pulls, you can choose one of five specific 5-star characters.
  • Weapon Banner/Silent Tension: Uses weapon coins. Hard pity at 70. Features a 50/50 system where you can select two standard weapons to potentially get if you lose the 50/50.
  • Limited Banner: Uses purple tickets. Features a limited 5-star character who won't be available again until a rerun.
  • YOU ARE MY DESTINY Banner: Uses purple tickets. Similar to the Starlight Show banner, but the pool of characters may differ. Grants Cognitive Afterimages with each pull.
