<i>"I tried ranking my top 5 favorite Super Sentai characters."</i>
Two years have passed since I said that, and the more series I've watched the more characters I've grown to like,
so it's evolved into a TOP 10, with some changes to my previous rank. You can see my old list <a href="top5.html">here</a>.
        <br><br>
I stuck to one character from each series. I like themes about expressing one's ideals, being released from the restraints of the past, and valuing individuals,
so the list is full of characters who embody these themes according to my own personal interpretation.
<u>There are a lot of spoilers, and I made note of major ones, so please read with caution.</u>

Yaiba can see into the deep darkness in Masumi's heart, and realzing he can make use of this, leaves him as the only survivor.
After Masumi has become a Boukenger, Yaiba meets him again and harmonizes the Three Headed Dragon of Darkness with the power of Masumi's darkness,
and as he had been planning all along, succeeds in drawing a cluster of dark energy towards the earth.
However, the presence of Masumi's teammates shines a light in his heart, and with that power he is able to defeat his fated rival Yaiba,
but leaves the team due to the fear of his own darkness...</b>
		      <br><br>
The real destination of his bouken/adventure was awakening from the sinister brain-washing he had undergone...
Yaiba, like a disgusting adult predator, destroyed and rebuilt Masumi's identity by forcing him into a horrible situation from a young age,
brain-washing him in order to make him a convenient accomplice, going as far as to make him feel responsible for what happened.
Under Yaiba's emotional control, Masumi lived with survivor's guilt, blaming himself, which Yaiba used as a way to develop Masumi's dark power.
Growing together with Natsuki as a close companion and Akashi watching over them like a parent helped Masumi realize what the real Precious was to him.
All he needed was to notice how his perception had been intentionally twisted, and his evolution from darkness to light is like a metaphor for this.
Although compassionate and kind, he possesses typical teenage edginess and sensitivity, a loveable guy who one wants to protect.

<b>Naga's story from episodes 26 to 31 deals with some unexpectedly deep themes, so he comes in at 8th place.
His home planet in the Hebitsukai System became embroiled in conflict due to emotions,
so its inhabitants abandoned their emotions and became very mechanical beings.
However, they didn't truly lose their emotions, but only suppressed them, and when the emotions locked away in Naga's heart are released,
he becomes Dark Naga, full of anger and hate.Shishi Red, Lucky, and Tenbin Gold, Balance, are able to save him from within his mind,
and he sheds tears for the first time in his life.
Naga understood from the start that while he couldn't feel them, various kinds of emotions do exist, and that it was positive emotions that brought about peace.
He left his home believing that achieving this was possible, and it was when he awakened to his role as the savior who will bring peace to his planet
that he understood objectively that his people were in fact possessed by impulsive and negative emotions,
and that recognizing and dealing with them internally didn't mean that positive emotions also needed to be denied.</b>
		      <br><br>
This arc does a great job of embodying Kyuranger's theme of "KYUkyoku no KYUseishu" ("Ultimate Saviors").
The show's content and setting are interesting and experimental, but it has a rather frivolous tone, and te are too many characters to develop properly,
so if the show's atmosphere were different, Naga definitely could have entered in the Top 5.
I also don't dislike the actor's intentionally unnatural and peculiar performance. (And it goes without saying, he has cool hair.)

Always more reserved than Ban and the other more excitable Dekarangers, Sen-chan,
the calm and intellectual analyst always collecting accurate information, ranks in at 7th place.
He's good at cracking mysteries, never overlooking subtle clues around him that will help solve the case.
Whenever a flash of insight is needed to solve a problem, he does a handstand at any place and time to find new ideas.
In Episodes 15 & 16 he helps the android Flora, who had been created to control the Machine Monster Gigas, grow to understand her heart and feelings,
giving her, who until then had only known to obey her destiny, a reason to live.
It's Sen-chan believing in her freedom that ends up saving the earth.
In episode 34, he boldly stands up to the privileged celebs led by Thousanian when they mercilessly toy with the lives of the weak,
and his interactions with the Chanbenarian alien Gin show how being the oldest of seven siblings has made him accepting and open-minded. It's a great episode!

Not to cause a stir, but his actor's personal demeanor made me think I could never become Sen-chan's fan,
but once I noticed the character's gentle and benevolent role, that stopped bothering me.

The Gosei Angels have been guardians of the earth since ancient times, harmonizing the forces of sky, earth, and ocean.
Alata is an angel in training of the Skyick tribe. He can hear the voices of the wind and of people's hearts,
approaching them like the breeze and offering spiritual support.
The angels believe in people's essential goodness and appeal to their spiritual side, always hoping that people and the earth will work together.
Their enemies make sharply critical points, saying that this tendency to value protecting people over defeating their enemies makes them weak,
that it's foolish to trust the same humans who have defiled the earth, or that they're just reciting platitudes.
However, since for better or worse the earth's future is in human's hands, all they can do is believe in people's goodness,
a stance that left an impression on me and made me think.
                     <br><br>
It's interesting that the enemies, who criticize the Goseigers for revealing their vulnerability in blindly insisting on their ideals for the sake of the earth,
actually have the more realistic stance.
The Goseigers remain unmoved, and the way in which their vision for a better reality makes the future illustrates the theme of the show.
Alata embodies this theme. Kind and gentle, he's very different from the image of red rangers until then,
but he also possesses another side, where the once calm breeze becoming a raging storm,
fiercely opposing those who defile goodness or deny potential, and it's this duality that I like about him. "Gotcha...!"

There's a scene in Episode 9 where he demonstrates several different martial arts which is treated pretty lightly, but his athletic prowess is really amazing!
His heart is as strong as is body, always protecting the weak, and in one episode he relates with and saves a boy whose father was attacked by the yokai.
The photo is taken from a scene in Episode 18 where he vows revenge against Young Noble Junior, who betrayed his friend Zashiki Warashi.
Jiraiya dealt with the death of his father and the betrayal of his sensei, having to be strong while throwing out his love for his teacher.

Is there anyone who wouldn't rank Asuka as one of their favorite characters after watching Abaranger??
I like him enough that Jiraiya had to move down to 4th place.
This was the next series I got really into after Timeranger when I was a kid, but I was totally blown away when I rewatched it recently!
All of the drama surrounding the Saurian from Dino Earth, Asuka, is particularly amazing.
He is a resistance fighter who lived through a period of war in the parallel world Dino Earth,
and chased his arch-enemies the Evolians when they came to attack Another Earth (our world).
There he meets with the other rangers, and while continuing to fight the Evolians,
he is attacked by a woman among their ranks named Jeanne, who looks exactly like the lover he had been separated from, Mahoro,
wearing the Armor of Darkness legendary among the Saurians.
While maintaining a deep love for Mahoro, Asuka has to defeat an enemy who looks exactly like her.
                      <br><br>
The drama gets really serious, and I can't praise it enough. What I explained above is just the beginning. Seriously, please watch this series if you haven't yet.
It gets criticized for its uneven tone,
but this <a href="https://manga.fandom.com/wiki/%C5%8Ckina_otomodachi" target="_blank">大きなお友達/okina otomodachi</a> considers it the best Sentai series.
Who else has the guts to crush a monolith with a single sword, and fashion a shield with bloodied hands?
His feelings and loyalty for the lover with whom he pledged marriage were strong enough to blow up a Giganoid with his bare hands!
Mahoro is also a great character, and I don't think there is anyone who would dislike Asuka,
who never gives up despite being the victim of cruel fate again and again.

At first he seemed like a shallow boy only interested in girls and money and I didn't like his character at all,
but he grows when he finds his role as someone who can support others and protect those endangered by the Gaiark,
and seeing him gradually develop into a noble warrior and person made him one of my favorite characters.
With his development, the seriousness and kindness that he had from the start are put to use helping others,
and in Episode 27 he even found the kindness to dress up like a girl for the sake of a lonely grandma who had lost her granddaughter.
If you want to see Hant at is best, check out the scene when he secretly gives some candy to Akinosuke, who came from Samurai World in Episodes 39-40.
In the photo he's performing as part of the idol unit G5 Prince. Please watch Episode 45 if you want to see a Sentai boy band!
                      <br><br>
The scary thing is that it seems like Hant's side hustles must have been financing all 5 of the Go-onger's expenses.
Maybe they get by using up the savings of Sousuke, Ren, and Gunpei, who all had jobs before becoming Go-ongers.
Their organizational structure isn't exactly clear. Hant-kun takes No. 2 again!
